Museum visit for International Women's Day on 8 March
International Women's Day has been celebrated since 1911, initially primarily as a protest for women's suffrage and the emancipation of female workers, and later as a day for equal rights and the protection of women's rights in general. In 1921, 8 March was then set as a fixed date for the day of remembrance. The Women and Equal Opportunities Department of the Waldeck-Frankenberg district also regularly organises special events to mark International Women's Day.
This year's programme includes a visit to the "Museum Ostwall im Dortmunder U" on 8 March. The exhibition "Women Artists in Expressionism and Fluxus" will be shown there as an invitation to explore female positions in art history. In the late 1930s, for example, the artist Vally Wieselthier addressed the American president with the appeal "Tell these people who I am!". She wanted to draw attention to the lack of recognition of women as great artists. Even almost 100 years later, this is still patchy.
The Women and Equal Opportunities Service invites all interested parties to take part in the museum trip. The participation fee of 15 euros includes the bus journey, admission to the museum and a guided tour of the museum. The trip departs from Frankenberg on 8 March at 9 a.m. with the option of joining the bus in Korbach to Dortmund; the return journey is scheduled for 3 p.m. Registration is possible until 25 February 2025 by calling 05631 954-1318 or via the district's website at www.landkreis-waldeck-frankenberg.de/veranstaltungen.
Background to the exhibition
The exhibition honours female artists who have long stood in the shadow of their male colleagues. Their works impressively show how women shaped art history but were often overlooked - a topic that is still relevant today. The Fluxus and Feminism section of the exhibition in particular focuses on the period of the emerging second wave of feminism and global networking, in which entire women's movements rebelled against social restrictions.
Selected female artists:
- Expressionism: Gabriele Münter, Marianne von Werefkin, Paula Modersohn-Becker - pioneers of powerful colours and expressive depictions
- Fluxus: Yoko Ono, Alison Knowles, Nam June Paik - avant-gardists of interactive art and performative works
