Award ceremony for the "Children show volunteering" painting competition

Last month, the district administration's volunteering team received many works of art, as all children in grades one to five were invited to take part in the "Children show volunteering" painting competition. Following the selection by a jury, today - on Volunteer Day - First District Councillor Karl-Friedrich Frese and Katharina Graf from the volunteer team presented the winners of the competition with their certificates and small gifts. Two special honours were also awarded.

A total of 53 pictures were drawn by the young people of our district last month and sent to the district administration's volunteering team. When the children in grades one to five thought about volunteering, animal welfare, neighbourhood help or the fire brigade came to mind particularly often. "Our region thrives on the voluntary commitment and helpfulness of the population. With the painting competition, we wanted to sensitise even the youngest children to the topic and its importance and fundamentally strengthen their appreciation of voluntary work," explained Karl-Friedrich Frese at the award ceremony.

The aim of the competition was to celebrate Volunteer Day on 5 December with an award ceremony and to highlight the importance of volunteering in society with artistic contributions. The aim was to give the children a playful approach to the topic of volunteering in order to raise awareness of voluntary work. "We received a really large number of creative drawings. It was not easy for the jury to choose the winners. The content, creative realisation and overall impression played a role in the selection and evaluation," adds Katharina Graf from the volunteering team.

One winning picture per class level was selected by the five-member jury. The winner from year one was Michel from the Edersee School in Herzhausen. Her picture showed the nativity play. Melina Leonie from year two at Valtin primary school drew a rubbish collection campaign. Helene's picture from the Edersee School in Herzhausen was chosen from the third year. She drew a choir, including the choir director. Anna Sophie, from the fourth grade of the Neuer Garten school, drew that volunteering means many helping hands and Tessa-Marie, from the fifth grade of the Humboldt school, drew a group of twirlers. In addition to the winners for each year group, two special prizes were also awarded. Veronika and Lara, both from the fourth grade at Wiegand-Gerstenberg School, drew reading mentors and a fire brigade operation during a major fire.

As a gift, the young artists received equipment for school lessons: drinking bottles, lunch boxes, notepads and pens were handed out, as well as children's tattoos, balloons and hats. The prizes were funded by the State Chancellery's #DeinEhrenamt support programme. The special prizes - a visit to the climbing centre in Willingen and a visit to the wildlife park at Lake Edersee - were donated by the respective company. "Overall, we are more than satisfied with the participation and hope that the children will gain broader access to volunteering through the campaign," concludes Katharina Graf.
