Protecting the environment: County awarded nature conservation prize

The district of Waldeck-Frankenberg already recognised the importance of comprehensive nature conservation at times when the preservation and protection of our natural environment was not yet a major issue. Since 1982, it has regularly - currently every two years - awarded a prize in recognition of special commitment to nature conservation as well as a youth nature conservation prize, as it will do in 2022.

In a small ceremony, but nevertheless worthy of the occasion, District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst awarded three prizewinners. Gerhard Kuhnhenne from Lichtenfels-Goddelsheim and Dr Karl-Hermann Svoboda from Volkmarsen received the main prize of 1,250 euros each. Jasmin Heitmann from Frankenberg (Eder) was honoured with the youth prize of 500 euros.

In his laudatory speech, the district administrator emphasised that both main award winners had discovered decades ago what natural treasures their homeland had to offer and since then had continuously worked for their protection. Numerous ornithological findings and publications of supra-regional importance are the pride of the district and can be attributed to the nature conservation award winners.

The youth award winner has also been involved in nature since primary school and thus for most of her still young life. In the meantime, Jasmin Heitmann herself has taken over the leadership of a children's group in the nature conservation youth. Van der Horst emphasised that it is important to introduce children and young people to nature conservation at an early age so that they can become the successors of seasoned conservationists like Gerhard Kuhnhenne and Dr Karl-Hermann Svoboda when they grow up.
