Reading competition: Paulina and Jakob go to the district decision

For three years, it could only be held digitally due to the restrictions of the Corona pandemic, but now young book lovers were once again able to meet in the presence of the 6th grade school reading competition of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels. In autumn last year, the school winners were determined, and at the beginning of February 2023, the winning children in the district competition, organised by the district. As an area district, Waldeck-Frankenberg is divided into two reading districts, North and South, so that the district will also be represented twice in the Kassel district decision. Paulina Kahl from the Edertalschule Frankenberg and Jakob Witte from the Gesamtschule Uplandschule Willingen beat their competitors in an exciting competition for the title.

9 schools from the southern part of the district and 14 schools from the northern part of the district had entered a school winner for the district reading competition. In the Frankenberg public library and in the Korbach youth hostel, the boys and girls first read a passage from a book they had chosen themselves. Afterwards, they had to prove their skills by reading an unknown text from a book for young people, which had been chosen by Jan Kanitz, head of the Frankenberg public library, for the southern district and Monika Weber, staff member of the Korbach public library, for the northern district. The jury determined the winner from both reading performances according to a point system.

A wide variety of books were chosen by the participants. Classics for young people such as "The Neverending Story" by Michael Ende or "The Adventures of Strong Wanja" by Otfried Preußler were on the programme as well as "Rico, Oskar und die Tieferschatten" by Andreas Steinhöfel or "Die Duftapotheke" by Anna Ruhe. The district decision in Kassel will take place in April after the Easter holidays and will again be organised by the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, which wishes Paulina and Jakob every success for this next stage of the competition.
