Applying for a residence permit for au pair workers (non-EU/EEA)
Performance specification
Au-pairs from most countries outside the EU or the EEA require an au-pair visa to enter Germany.
Different regulations apply for individual countries. Citizens of the following countries can enter Germany without a visa. You must apply for a residence permit within 3 months of entering the country:
- Australia
- Israel
- Japan
- Canada
- New Zealand
- Republic of Korea
- United States of America
Tip: Despite the existing visa exemption, it may be advisable to enter the country with a visa for au pair employment. You should therefore enquire at the German diplomatic mission in your home country.
The residence permit for au pair employment is valid for
- helping out in the host family's household and
- the childcare.
Care activities (e.g. nursing or care of the elderly) are not permitted.
The residence permit is valid for a maximum of one year. You cannot have it extended for the same purpose.
Please note: You may only work as an au pair once you have obtained a residence permit for au pair employment. The regulations for foreign workers are very strict. If you violate them, this may have consequences under residence law.
Process flow
Before entering Germany, you must apply for a national visa for au pairs in your home country, if necessary.
After entering Germany, you must first register your main place of residence. Then apply for the residence permit in writing at the Aliens' Registration Office.
Since 01.09.2011 you have received the residence title in the form of a cheque card with additional electronic functions. You can find more information on this under "Apply for an electronic residence title (eAT)".
Depending on where you live, the foreigners authority is the municipal administration or the district office.
Note: The Foreigners' Registration Office will obtain the approval of the Federal Employment Agency if this is required.
Requirements
Prerequisites for the issuance of the residence permit are:
- For au pair workers:
- They are between 18 and under 27 years old.
- You have a basic knowledge of the German language.
- You possess
- a valid national "visa for au pair workers",
- a concluded au pair contract and
- health insurance.
- registered main residence with the host family
- For host families:
- The host family speaks German as their mother tongue.
In principle, at least one adult family member must be a German citizen.
The family may also come from a German-speaking country or a part of the country where German is the native language.
If German is spoken as a family language in the family, the employment can be approved if the au pair employee does not come from a home country of the host parents.
A family includes married couples with or without children as well as unmarried couples or single parents with a child in the same household.
- The host family speaks German as their mother tongue.
- The employment agency has agreed to the employment.
- For au pair workers:

- Confirmation of registration of the main residence with the host family
- Proof of health insurance
