Geopark schools' certificates are renewed

For a year now, the Corona pandemic has also been affecting everyday life at schools, and teachers and students have to cope with numerous restrictions. Extracurricular activities in particular are almost no longer possible, at least not in class or in larger groups. Topics such as environmental education, climate protection, mindful interaction with nature, but also the subject areas of the Geopark unfortunately often have to take a back seat during this time of reduced teaching opportunities.

The GrenzWelten National Geopark is therefore setting an example and offering the current geopark schools the best possible support for the time "after Corona". The Geopark wants to implement this support by extending the existing certificates for two years. Thus, the Berliner Schule in Korbach, the Franziskus Primary School in Bruchhausen and the secondary school in Marsberg continue to be active GrenzWelten Geopark schools.

Kim Peis from the Geopark project office emphasises: "All three schools have anchored the topics of the Geopark in their everyday school life and lessons in an exemplary manner. GrenzWelten would like to express its sincere thanks for the committed and creative work of the school management and teachers. "We are very much looking forward to further cooperation and assure you of our active support," adds Kim Peis.

The "Geopark School" certificate is intended to provide incentives for educational institutions to deal more intensively with regional geological history, nature and culture; in the school curricula, the subject area can be found under the keyword "Education for Sustainable Development". The Geopark creates the necessary space and provides support with teaching and learning materials as well as tips on experiments and extracurricular places of learning. The geopark guides, who have received further training in nature education, actively support the schools as experts in their respective regions.

The cooperation between the school and the Geopark promotes scientific and interdisciplinary skills and strengthens the pupils' environmental awareness and regional knowledge.
