Adventurous weekend for boys at the sports camp

"On the way in the wilderness" were 23 boys aged 11 to 15 on a weekend in mid-September. The district's sports and youth work service, together with the Korbach youth centre, the Protestant youth in the Eder church district and the Nolte occupational therapy practice, invited them to the sports camp near Harbshausen on Lake Eder. After a pandemic year full of restrictions on contact and movement, the boys were particularly interested in movement, games and community activities.

The various activities on the camp grounds and the new ninja course helped to satisfy the urge to move. And the boys were also able to let off steam in a triathlon of a different kind and prove their team spirit in rotating small groups. On a trekking tour, they sharpened their sense of orientation in the terrain, trained strength, endurance and stamina in mountain biking, and showed courage and a sense of responsibility in the climbing course. Archery and action games were just as popular as the pond on the grounds of the sports camp, where the boys could refresh themselves.

As if that were not enough, a fire workshop provided additional variety. There was stick bread and barbecue at the campfire, and the boys were able to engage in conversations or simply let their souls dangle. At the end of the weekend, they successfully completed a small challenge, organised themselves independently in small groups, competed against each other in various ball and board games or tried their hand at building bridges out of loose wooden sticks. The conclusion of the weekend for most of the participants: "I'll be back next year, hopefully with the same great coaches." The team of supervisors also praised the harmonious cooperation and enjoyed many good personal encounters.

The offer for boys is unique in this form in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district; the high number of participants has shown how eager the young people are for adventure, exercise and community experiences after the pandemic-related break. Next year, the district's sports and youth work department will again make the boys' camp possible and take up the expressed wishes and interests of the participants, says Matthias Schäfer, head of the department.

The boys' camp is a cooperation project of the Waldeck-Frankenberg district with changing municipal and church sponsors as well as the occupational therapy practice Nolte. Interested youth groups are cordially invited to participate. For more information, please contact the sports and youth work department at 05631 954-461 or e-mail andreas.greif@lkwafkb.de.
