Barrier-free gastronomy: district awards prizes for conversion measures

The district wants to reduce barriers in Waldeck-Frankenberg - also in gastronomy. For this reason, it is awarding prizes in a competition for (renovation) construction measures by restaurateurs that contribute to more participation and accessibility. Applications are accepted until 15 September.

The competition is intended to reward the efforts of businesses in the catering industry that are working towards more accessibility in their restaurants. It does not matter whether it is a question of large construction or conversion measures or small ideas and improvements that ensure that people with disabilities can participate even better. There is also no specific sum that has to be invested in the measure. Only the benefit counts.

"We want to support the ideas - large or small - that contribute to more accessibility in the gastronomy sector," says the coordinator of the Model Region Accessibility at the district Alexandra Köck. "Therefore, we would like to encourage everyone to submit appropriate measures to us." The jury will sift through these and determine a ranking. Thus, a main prize with prize money of 5,000 euros will be awarded and five further recognition prizes worth 1,000 euros each. The jury consists of representatives from the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, the association Aktion für behinderte Menschen e.V., the Ergänzende unabhängige Teilhabeberatung (EUTB), the city of Korbach and the Deutscher Hotel- und Gaststättenverband.

How to apply? All you have to do is submit an informal application that includes a general description of the restaurant or business. Furthermore, it must describe the (conversion) building project or the concrete measure as well as outline the concrete added value for accessibility. In addition, concepts, plans, photos or other documentation and a time schedule should be submitted. Finally, the project and the expected effect should be justified. Measures that have been completed or are in the process of being implemented can be submitted.

Applications can be submitted by e-mail or by post to the district office. More information on the competition can be found here. Further information on state funding in the area of the special programme for restaurants can also be found there.
