With author Pawellek through the Geopark
The GrenzWelten National Geopark organises training events for its geopark guides at regular intervals. Geopark manager Dr Georg Bresser and his dedicated team took the opportunity to have author Thomas Pawellek travel from Munich to the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg to present his book "Der Geopark Grenzwelten - Östlicher Teil". During an entertaining excursion, Pawellek presented important types of rock in the eastern part of the Geopark as an educational speaker.
The excursion was attended by both veterans and junior staff who are currently training to become geopark guides on a one-year course. They got to know three of the regions and topics in practice for which local expertise is taught in their course. The course participants can now identify and recognise Zechstein, middle red sandstone and volcanic basalt relics from their own experience.
Geopark manager Dr Bresser and training officer Pawellek had selected geotopes that are particularly striking examples of their respective rock types as destinations. The first stop was the rock outcrop "Zechsteinmeer bei Ober-Werbe", an abandoned quarry that shows deposits from the first flooding phase of the Zechstein Sea 250 million years ago. A prime example of middle red sandstone could be seen at the second station, the Bil(d)stein near Naumburg.
At the end of the excursion, the landmark of Schauenburg-Martinhagen was on the programme, the Martinstein, a volcanic relict in the Wolfhager Land located in the middle of the town. The perfectly selected destinations helped to further increase the interest of the excursion participants in the geological treasures of the GrenzWelten.
