Local mobility coordination: field trip to Frankenberg
They are the experts in the Hessian districts for walking and cycling: the local mobility coordinators. Around 20 of them from all over Hesse met at the beginning of September for a joint excursion on foot in Frankenberg (Eder). The programme included the newly built wooden Eder bridges and the new footpaths and cycle paths in the Eder floodplains - the project with which the town won the German Cycling Award 2024.
Frankenberg's mayor Barbara Eckes and Susanne Paulus, head of the construction department in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, welcomed the guests: "Under the motto Smart, connected, green - integrated cycle traffic planning in Frankenberg, the town has been able to implement important projects in recent years and has also received several awards for this - including the German Cycling Award. We are delighted with the keen interest shown in the excursion and see this as additional motivation for future projects."
Under the expert guidance of Frankenberg's cycling officer Sophie Berkenkopf and the district's two local mobility coordinators, Nicole Sude and Martha Schweizer, the participants were given lots of insights and background information on current and planned measures. Representatives from the engineering and planning offices Miebach and WAGU as well as directly from the Frankenberg urban planning team also provided further expert input. A special feature of Frankenberg's cycle traffic planning is above all the consistent integration into existing urban development concepts and the joint planning of grey, blue and green infrastructure.
The specialist excursion is part of the programme offered by the Hesse Local Mobility Working Group (AGNH), which is based in the state of Hesse. The aim is to support local authorities in Hesse on their way to more cycling and walking with a wide range of programmes. The staff positions of the local mobility coordinators are also funded by the state of Hesse. Dr Klaus Dapp and Peter Roßteutscher from the Local Mobility Department of the State of Hesse also took part in the excursion.
