Apply for a licence to practise medicine

  • Performance specification

    Once you have successfully completed your medical degree and your specialist training, you may apply for a licence to practise as a doctor. Once you have been granted a licence to practise as a doctor, you are entitled to practise medicine in Germany independently and on your own responsibility.
    The licence to practise medicine is granted for an indefinite period and is valid throughout the Federal Republic of Germany

  • Requirements

    A licence to practise as a doctor is granted upon application if you:

    • have not engaged in any conduct which would render you unfit or unreliable to practise the medical profession
    • are not unfit to practise the profession for health reasons,
    • have successfully completed their medical training in the Federal Republic of Germany (a six-year medical degree),
    • have the knowledge of the German language required to carry out their professional duties.
  • Which documents are required?

    • Identity document
    • Birth certificate or a recent extract from the parents’ family register
    • where applicable, marriage certificate or registered civil partnership certificate (proof of change of name)
    • Up-to-date, tabular, signed CV
    • Official certificate of good conduct (document type O)
    • Examination certificate
    • where applicable, a doctoral degree certificate;
    • Declaration of no criminal record: A written, informal declaration with the following wording: “I hereby declare that I have no previous criminal convictions and that there are no criminal proceedings pending against me in court or any preliminary investigations being conducted by the public prosecutor’s office.” (Date and signature)
    • A medical certificate, issued no more than one month ago, stating that the applicant is not unfit to practise the profession on health grounds

  • What deadlines do I have to observe?

    You do not need to observe any statutory deadlines when submitting your application.
