Apply for a licence to practise medicine

    After completing your studies and specialist training, you can apply for a licence to practise medicine. Once you have been granted your licence to practise medicine, you are entitled to exercise the medical profession in Germany independently and on your own responsibility.

    Graduates of medicine at Hessian universities apply for the licence to practise medicine at the Hessian State Office for Health and Care (HLfGP). Once the requirements have been met, the HLfGP issues the licence to practise medicine in the form of a certificate.

    The Licensing Regulations for Doctors (Approbationsordnung für Ärzte) list in detail which evidence and information must be enclosed with the application

  • Requirements

    • The licence to practise medicine is granted on application if the applicant:
      • has not been guilty of conduct which renders him/her unworthy or unreliable to practise medicine
      • is not unfit for the exercise of the profession from a health point of view
      • has passed the medical examination within the scope of this Act after completing a course of study in medicine at a scientific university of at least 5,500 hours and a duration of at least six years, of which at least eight, but no more than twelve months, must be spent on practical training in hospitals or suitable facilities for the provision of medical care to the sick
      • has the knowledge of the German language required for the exercise of the professional activity
  • Which documents are required?

    • Application for licensure
    • Concise curriculum vitae
    • Birth certificate, for married persons also the marriage certificate
    • Proof of identity
    • Official certificate of good conduct, which must not have been issued earlier than one month before submission
    • Declaration as to whether judicial criminal proceedings or a preliminary investigation by the public prosecutor's office are pending against the applicant
    • Medical certificate, which must not be older than one month, stating that the applicant is not unfit in health for the exercise of the profession

  • What deadlines do I have to observe?

    Due to the time limit of individual documents to be submitted, it is recommended to submit the application at the earliest 2 weeks before the last examination date.
