District promotes cycling: Volkmarsen is also supported

The district promotes cycling in Waldeck-Frankenberg with a total of 1.2 million euros. The towns and municipalities are thus supported in the expansion of their cycling infrastructure. Currently, projects in Frankenberg, Haina, Korbach, Bromskirchen and Volkmarsen were subsidised for about 470,000 euros.

In Bromskirchen, funding is being provided for the construction of a gap closure on a farm road between Bromskirchen and Somplar. The road surface is being prepared for 280 metres so that the rolling resistance for cyclists is reduced. This is a quality assurance measure that is listed accordingly in the everyday cycle path concept. The grant amounts to almost €22,500.

Two further approval notices were issued to the town of Volkmarsen. The construction of a 365-metre gap between Külte and the core town in a water-bound surface is subsidised. In addition, the town receives a grant for the standardised signposting of cycle paths in the Volkmarsen town area.

The municipality of Haina is also installing signposting for the cycle paths in the area of the three participating municipalities of Haina, Frankenau and Gemünden. The district is participating with a grant of 24,000 euros. The total cost of the project is estimated at 120,000 euros.

In Korbach, the renewal of the cycle path "KB2" is being completed and subsidised. This is a 750-metre gap closure from Korbach to Berndorf. The asphalt road surface of the service road is being renewed.

Three more approval notices go to the city of Frankenberg, which has recently launched many bicycle-friendly projects. The construction of the Wildparkbrücke bridge alone is estimated at almost three million euros. The town will receive a grant from the state of Hesse's Local Mobility Guideline. The uncovered share of the costs is subsidised by the district with 40 per cent. The maximum subsidy of 310,000 euros has been approved. In addition, the bicycle lane "Am Hain" in Frankenberg's core town will be implemented and a gap between Dörnholzhausen and Haubern will be closed.

In order to finance measures like these, the district issued a guideline for the promotion of everyday cycling about a year ago. It serves to support the municipalities in implementing measures of the Everyday Cycle Route Concept and improving the cycling infrastructure. Many measures - whether new construction or maintenance - are also the responsibility of the municipality as the road authority. The guideline is intended to serve as a practical implementation aid. "However, we do not only want to make concepts, but also give money to support the municipalities," says the First District Commissioner of the district Karl-Friedrich Frese.
