Tropical temperatures: specialist health service gives tips on protection
The district of Waldeck-Frankenberg is currently experiencing tropical temperatures - up to 33 degrees centigrade. The health department is therefore providing tips on what you should bear in mind to protect yourself in this weather. This is because the hot weather can be particularly harmful to the health of the elderly, sick people and children.
You should always protect yourself, children and older people from heat and direct sunlight and, above all, use sun cream to protect your skin from burns. You should also wear light clothing and a hat and, if possible, stay indoors or in shady areas during the day, avoid strenuous physical activity and postpone outdoor activities until early morning or evening. Short, regular breaks in shady or cool areas help you to recharge your batteries.
An adequate supply of fluids and electrolytes is also particularly important in the persistently hot temperatures. It is advisable to drink water, fruit tea or diluted fruit juices - regularly and not just when you feel thirsty. Alcohol should be avoided, as should ice-cold drinks, as these tend to promote sweating. As far as nutrition is concerned, easily digestible, vitamin-rich meals are recommended. If possible, living spaces should be kept cool - by airing them in the early morning or late evening and providing shade.
The heat can be particularly stressful for older and sick people, but also for children, pregnant women and newborn babies. If you experience physical symptoms such as weakness, pallor, nausea, dizziness, excessive sweating and circulatory problems, it is particularly important to drink plenty of fluids and get enough rest. In case of doubt, however, a doctor should be consulted to be on the safe side in the event of such symptoms, which can lead to fever or confusion. The specialist health service also calls on people to look out not only for themselves, but also for their fellow human beings: Older, weakened or demented people in particular often need extra motivation to drink in this weather.
