Primary school

  • Performance specification

Children come to primary school with many different experiences and learning requirements. Learning in primary school ties in with these individual learning needs of the children and enables them to deepen and expand their knowledge and skills.

The primary school, as the common basic level of the education system, comprises the first four grades. As a rule, children in Hesse start school at the age of six, which means that compulsory schooling begins on 1 August for all children born up to and including 1 July and who thus reach the age of six by 30 June. Younger children, so-called "optional children", can be admitted to school early at the parents' request. The decision on admission is made by the headmaster or headmistress, taking into account a school doctor's report.

After four years of primary school, children in Hesse move on to secondary school. The choice of educational path after primary school is basically a matter for the parents, who are supported in this decision primarily by the teachers at the primary schools.
