Riesenstein near Heimarshausen is the hiking destination on 19 September

The "Day of the Geotope" will take place this year on 19 September. It is an initiative of the Academy for Geosciences and Geotechnologies, formerly the Academy of Geosciences in Hanover. While the Open Monument Day focuses on historical buildings, the Geotope Day focuses on geological facts and the importance of geotopes and geotope protection. The event is under the patronage of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and is supported by UNESCO.

The GrenzWelten National Geopark also regularly participates in Geotope Day, this year among other things in cooperation with the Habichtswald Nature Park by offering a guided tour in compliance with the current corona rules to the Geotope of the Year 2021, the Riesenstein near Heimarshausen. The mysterious boulder lies hidden in the forest, is unique in its shape and is surrounded by legends. Its cultural-historical and geological significance also make it an attractive destination for an excursion. And with a bit of luck, attentive observers will also discover the Korbach prehistoric dachshund Procynosuchus there.

During the hike, Katja Klages, a nature park guide from Habichtswald, will explain all kinds of interesting facts about the striking mushroom rock as well as the surrounding geological history and landscape. The excursion starts at 11:00 a.m. at the village community centre in Naumburg-Heimarshausen. The tour is scheduled to last about 3 hours. Registration is required and can be made until the day before the excursion (Saturday, 18 September 2021) under e-mail katja.klages@web.de.

The Habichtswald Nature Park and the GrenzWelten National Geopark cordially invite all interested parties to the free hike on 19 September.
