District and town of Gemünden present renaturation measures

The restoration of near-natural habitats promotes environmental, species and climate protection - and also makes a significant contribution to flood protection. District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst was recently able to convince himself of some successful measures at a site visit with the town of Gemünden, which has implemented many exemplary renaturation measures in cooperation with the district's Environment and Climate Protection Department and the Regional Council in Kassel in recent years.

The measures implemented included, among others, the raising of riverbeds, the creation of floodplains during floods, the creation of a tributary, the dismantling of old weirs, the reconstruction or renovation of bridge structures or bank flattening for preventive flood protection. They were financed by the state of Hesse together with the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, the town of Gemünden and the Alpla company located in the town.
