Mathias Bauer School certified as an ESD school

Thinking and acting sustainably: This is the aim of the nationwide "Education for Sustainable Development" initiative, including in schools in Waldeck-Frankenberg. The district supports its implementation - and has now been able to support the Mathias Bauer School, the first special school in Waldeck-Frankenberg, in achieving certification.

For a school to be recognised as an ESD school, it must have at least two classes taking part in the ESD diploma. In order to implement sustainable education into everyday school life and the school organisation in the long term, schools must also implement two long-term ESD projects with an implementation period of one to two years and involving as large a group of pupils as possible.

Class council and herb box
The Mathias Bauer School has introduced a regular class council and built a herb box in its cookery club. In the class council, current topics of the class community are discussed, decided and implemented - thus teaching important skills such as democratic behaviour or communication and social skills and promoting coexistence in the class community. In the cookery club, the pupils have built a herb box together, in which they also grow their own herbs, which are used in cooking lessons. At the same time, teaching units on fair trade, the ecological footprint, seasonal and regional foods and healthy eating take place in class.

Important educational concept
"The aim is to recognise the schools' sustainable activities and incorporate them into everyday school life and school organisation in the long term," says District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst, who is delighted with the sustainable projects at Mathias Bauer School. "The school has embraced an important educational concept here."

The district's schools department supports schools in developing and implementing their sustainability strategy and provides them with concrete measures to do so. Schools interested in the project are welcome to contact project manager Raphael Chirakakis on 05631 - 954 1516 or by e-mail: raphael.chirakakis@lkwafkb.de.
