Trainees build barbecue for Flechtdorfer Straße residential quarter

In the last few weeks, apprentices in the metal workshop of the vocational training centre of the district craftsmen's association have built a barbecue grill for the residents of the Flechtdorfer Straße residential quarter in Korbach as part of their training - and recently handed it over to the district.

Drawing up plans, procuring materials, welding parts: from planning to implementation, the barbecue that the trainee metal construction specialists built under the supervision of workshop manager Armin Leye at the Berufsförderungswerk was a project of independent planning and personal contribution. Now it has found its permanent place in the Flechtdorfer Straße residential quarter, a shared accommodation run by the district to provide short-term accommodation for refugees - mainly from Ukraine.

Independent catering
On the 9,000 square metre site of a former furniture store, small lockable accommodation facilities for 288 people have been created in five modular housing blocks. In the specially equipped kitchen tent, 24 kitchen niches are available for the preparation of meals. There, the residents can prepare their own meals - and in future also use the new grill for this purpose.

"Our trainees have put together a great project here that not only fits well into the training process, but also has a charitable purpose," says the managing director of the district crafts association Gerhard Brühl. "It is a pleasure for us to be able to support the close cooperation with the district through projects like this," adds the operational department head of the Berufsförderungswerk des Handwerks Maria Djambazov.

"Good things done together"
First District Commissioner Karl-Friedrich Frese expressed his thanks to all those involved: "We have done good things together. The project contributes to the local people being able to cater for themselves - and when the weather is nice, they can also prepare their meals outside here on the grounds." This also contributes to another piece of independence and self-determination for the people who are seeking shelter here and first have to find their way in the new environment.
