New THM building in Frankenberg: construction to start in autumn 2024

The new building for the dual study programme Studium-Plus of the Technical University of Central Hesse will be built on the site of the multi-storey car park in Frankenberg. The committees of the district and the city of Frankenberg have already paved the way for this through corresponding resolutions. The district has now presented the concrete time schedule for the project, which will be implemented as a public-private cooperation project: Construction of the THM campus is expected to start in autumn 2024.

Clear commitment to the university location
District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst says: "The new university building is a very clear commitment to the THM location in Frankenberg." The campus in the Philipp Soldan city is to be further developed, new premises for modern teaching are to be created and thus made fit for the future. "The THM is and will remain an important factor for the education and business location Waldeck-Frankenberg," the district administrator continues to position himself clearly. "We want to offer young people the best study conditions here on site." The needs-based and future-proof infrastructure plays a decisive role in this.

Completion in late summer 2026
The city of Frankenberg will make the area on Uferstraße available for the new building, where the old multi-storey car park currently stands. This will be demolished for this purpose. The two-year construction period for the large-scale project is expected to start in autumn 2024, so that the building can be expected to be completed in late summer 2026 according to current planning. According to current plans, the university could start operating at the new location in autumn 2026.

Rooms for around 180 students
At the moment, the premises of the Technical University of Central Hesse at the Frankenberg site are located at the administrative office of the district in the building of the former health office. Since the number of students has grown continuously in recent years, the district has decided to create new, modern and needs-oriented premises for up to 180 students. A three-storey building is to be constructed in which study and administrative activities will take place on two levels. The third level will be available for free use by the building's operator. One idea would be to create micro-apartments for students here, for example.

Realisation in public-law cooperation
The district is realising the project within the framework of a PPP model. This means: PPP stands for "Public Private Partnership" and means that a private company planned, built and financed the building and also operates it. The district rents the building accordingly for the accommodation of the Frankenberg location of the Technical University of Central Hesse - according to current planning for 25 years.

In order to find an investor for the multi-million project, the district will initiate the Europe-wide tendering process in a few weeks by means of a negotiated procedure with a preliminary competition of participants and with the involvement of an auditor and a law firm. The new THM building is already the second project that the district is financing in this way: The new building for the vocational schools in Kasseler Straße in Korbach was already built using this model.
