Climate case helps with experimentation and understanding

Investigating and understanding scientific relationships with the help of simple experiments: In order to make this possible at all schools in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, the Waldeck-Frankenberg regional assembly of the Kassel-Marburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) decided at its most recent meeting to finance the purchase of twelve LMU climate suitcases. An experimental case costs 319 euros. Ralph Hübschmann, Chairman of the Regional Assembly, together with Eduard Faber from the IHK Service Centre, has now handed over twelve of these cases to the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg for further loan. These can be borrowed by schools from the district's media centre in Korbach and Frankenberg.

Using relatively simple structures from the climate cases, pupils can, for example, recreate the acidification of the oceans and thus better understand it. Last year, the Klimaneutrales Waldeck-Frankenberg association sponsored a climate case for every school in the district. "A great campaign that inspired our decision," says Ralph Hübschmann, explaining the motivation of the entrepreneurs at the IHK regional assembly. "The suitcases are so well received in schools that the demand is much greater than the supply. So that classes can now experiment with one climate case each in several small groups at the same time, it is now possible to borrow the twelve new cases for their teaching units from the district's media centre." At the same time, this promotes interest in the STEM fields of maths, IT, science and technology. Astrophysicists Cecilia Scorza and Harald Lesch developed the climate cases in cooperation with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, and the Caritas workshop in Munich-Dachau is responsible for their production.

"The suitcases enable pupils to experiment for themselves, deepen their understanding of science, awaken an interest in climate-related topics and think and act in a sustainable way," says District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst. These are a good addition to the Education for Sustainable Development initiative, as part of which the district actively supports all schools in the district in implementing their sustainability strategy - and provides them with concrete measures to do so. "We would therefore like to thank the IHK for purchasing the climate suitcases."

The cases add another product to the range offered by the district's media centre. The media centre also offers various other exciting items for schools, kindergartens and clubs in the district: these include Lego Spike programming sets, semi-professional video cameras with a green screen, modern Bluetooth boxes and high-performance projectors for small and large events and much more. The cases and other media can be borrowed by schools from the district's media centre. Further information is also available online on the media centre's website.
