Open day on 3 November in the new museum in the monastery
After three years of renovation, the district's own museum in Frankenberg Monastery will be opening its doors to visitors again in November - and to mark the occasion, is cordially inviting all interested parties to an open day on Sunday, 3 November from 11 am to 5 pm.
The museum was founded in 1952 as the district home museum in the north wing of the Cistercian convent of St Georgenberg, which was dissolved during the Reformation. In 1984, it was extended to include the Mauritius Chapel, built in the Romanesque style. Following a comprehensive redesign, the former cloister and the rooms on the ground floor and first floor now house an exhibition on the town and district of Frankenberg - from the town's heyday in the Humanist era to the district town period of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Views of the town and the district
After completion, the museum invites visitors to travel through the centuries in the town and old district of Frankenberg on two floors under the title "Frankenberg an der Eder - views of the town and the district". The refectory, the lower exhibition room, focuses on the life and imagery of the town of Frankenberg from the 14th to the 16th century. In the dormitory, the upper exhibition room, the focus will be on life in the farming town and the rural old district of Frankenberg. The departments are linked by a "time window". For example, traditional costumes will be juxtaposed with today's fashion, the former use of water power with today's electrification of mills or the town planning of the Middle Ages with modern town planning and redevelopment.
Together with the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, the team led by volunteer museum director Dr Birgit Kümmel and Hartmut Wecker has been able to realise the project over the past few years - also with the support of the state of Hesse. "The result of the new concept is wonderful. We can now see a completely redesigned exhibition," says a delighted District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst. "I would like to thank the entire team for their fantastic work and would like to invite all interested parties to come and see it for themselves at the open day or during regular opening hours."
In addition to the open day, the museum is open on the following days: Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2pm to 5pm, Sundays from 11am to 5pm and by prior arrangement on 0151 20551597. Further information can be found here.
