    If the parents of a child are not married to each other, paternity must be acknowledged. If the father refuses, a guardianship can be set up for the child concerned at the youth welfare office. The guardian informs and advises on the steps to be taken. He or she endeavours to have paternity acknowledged and represents the child in court proceedings in order to enforce his or her rights appropriately. The guardianship is a free service offered by the youth welfare office.

    Upon receipt of the application, the youth welfare office immediately becomes the child's guardian. The guardianship ends as soon as the applicant requests this in writing, when he or she reaches the age of majority or when the prerequisites for the establishment of a guardianship cease to apply.
