Avoid forests due to storm damage

Gale-force winds, thunderstorms and heavy rain: The district of Waldeck-Frankenberg was also affected by the heavy storms last week. Many forests and field paths still are. For safety reasons, the district and the Waldeck district administration therefore recommend that people refrain from visiting the forests for the time being.

Although the first acute dangers after the storm have been eliminated, it is still dangerous in the forests a few days after the storm. The reason: The trees are already damaged by the drought of the last few years and have been further stressed by the storm. There is therefore a danger that branches will break and fall down late, or that whole trees will fall down afterwards if they were pushed during the storm but not yet completely blown down. There are also still fallen trees above some forest roads and the heavy rain has also partially damaged these.

The team of Kommunalwald Waldeck-Frankenberg GmbH and the Domanialverwaltung is already in the process of obtaining an overview of the extent of the damage and possible danger situations in the communal forests. The initial assessment shows that, fortunately, there was no widespread windthrow as in the storms "Friedericke" in 2018 or "Zynep" in 2022, but only local damage to the forest. Together with the forestry companies, the paths will be made passable and accessible again in the coming days and weeks and the windthrown wood will be processed.
