Winners of the city and school cycling awarded

Use your bike, save emissions: This year, the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, together with 19 towns and municipalities, took part in the nationwide city cycling and school cycling campaign for the second time - and with great success. Around 2,500 cyclists - about 500 more than last year - took part in the campaign throughout the district and were honoured for their success at a ceremony by the first district councillor.

629,223 kilometres were covered by the participants of the city and school cycling in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg in the period from 4 to 24 June. This impressive achievement corresponds to a saving of 102 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared to the use of motorised vehicles. "Last year, the approximately 2,000 participants saved 66 tonnes of CO2 emissions. With only 500 more participants this year, 36 more tonnes of emissions were saved. This is really a very remarkable achievement that all participants can be proud of," said First District Commissioner Karl-Friedrich Frese.

In Hesse, the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg is in 9th place with the number of kilometres cycled and even in 2nd place if you look at the kilometres per inhabitant in the size category of more than 100,000 inhabitants. In the competition between the cities and municipalities, the city of Frankenberg cycled itself into first place with 152,739 kilometres. Bad Wildungen came second with 61,854 kilometres, followed by Hatzfeld with 54,783 kilometres. "With this result, Frankenberg secures the title of "most cycling-active municipality with a population of 10,000 or more" again this year. But Hatzfeld is also in first place - as it was last year - when it comes to the comparison with cities and municipalities with a population of less than 10,000," the First District Commissioner went on to explain. Reinhold Erb was honoured as the most active cyclist with 2,554 kilometres.

However, special mention should also be made of the schools that participated in the school cycling event. The pupils collected kilometres with great commitment and zeal and thus not only contributed to climate protection, but also promoted their own health. This year, first place went to the Goddelsheim middle school with a total of 9,663 kilometres - and is thus also considered the most cycling-active school in the district. In second place with 5,928 kilometres is the Christian-Rauch-Schule from Bad Arolsen and in third place is the Kugelsburgschule from Volkmarsen with 4,997 kilometres.

In the coming year, the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg will again take part in the Climate Alliance's campaign and call on people to cycle. All information about the winners is also available on the website of the district at www.landkreis-waldeck-frankenberg.de.
