Transport department in Frankenberg closed from 14 to 21 June

The Frankenberg administrative office of the district, the former monastery of St. Georgenberg, is about to undergo the most far-reaching structural changes in about 60 years: the aging east wing facing the town centre is to be demolished to open up the view of the historical ensemble again. In preparation for the construction work, the registration and driving licence offices, which are currently housed there, will also move to Auestraße 12 - and are therefore not accessible from 14 to 21 June.

A mobile system construction unit will be set up at the new location for a transitional period, so that the transport department will be able to offer its services there without restriction and as before to all customers from 22 June. "However, this is only a temporary solution for the very public-intensive contact points of our administration," District Administrator Dr. Reinhard Kubat and First District Commissioner Karl-Friedrich Frese make clear. "We are in talks with the Frankenberg-based company Finger Haus, which is planning to erect a commercial building in Frankenberg," Kubat and Frese continue.

The district will rent the necessary rooms there on a permanent basis and provide a comprehensive range of services using all the possibilities of digital technology. According to current plans, the transport service will probably be able to start operations at the new location in autumn 2023. Demolition work on the east wing on the monastery grounds is scheduled to start this year in July.

"The background for the decision to demolish the building was ultimately the need for renovation that had accumulated," explains head of the building department Karl-Friedrich Frese. "It urgently needed to be brought up to date, especially in terms of energy efficiency. According to conservative estimates, this would have required a financial outlay of about 1.3 million euros.

Together with the town of Frankenberg, a good solution was found - and a transfer of the tract was offered, as well as the sale of the associated land. This offer was in line with the concepts for the urban development of the Illerstadt, so that both contract partners came to a mutual agreement. The city of Frankenberg will take over the east wing on 1 July of this year and demolish it within a reasonable period of time. The property will be included in the urban development plans.

By giving up the east wing, the district will lose about 1,000 square metres of office space and over 500 square metres of basement and storage space. However, the specialised services of building, environment and rescue services, fire protection and disaster control will also temporarily find a new domicile on the former Stölcker site in Schreufa. "This presents us with organisational challenges, but we have found appropriate solutions in the interest of the citizens and our staff," emphasises District Administrator Dr Reinhard Kubat.
