Hessian Animal Welfare Award for Diemelstadt's Pieper Sheep Farm

The Pieper sheep farm from Diemelstadt-Laubach can be pleased about a very special award: it received this year's Hessian Prize for Farm Animal Husbandry worth 5,000 euros. The prize, which is awarded every two years, is intended to promote and honour innovative ideas for the welfare of animals in agriculture.

District councillor Fritz Schäfer congratulated shepherd Jan Pieper and his wife Carola as well as their two children on the well-deserved recognition of their commitment to animal welfare. "It is obvious that for you shepherding is not a profession but a passion," the district councillor praised the family. The 450 Merino sheep on the farm could not have found a better home.

On the Pieper farm, the animals lead a primal and nature-loving life outdoors. They feed mainly on fresh greenery, which they find on their wanderings within a maximum radius of 100 kilometres. The farm includes an online farm shop and its own butchery. The lamb produced has been certified organic since 2016.
