GrenzWelten Geopark, Western Section: Book handed over to the district authority

The ink has barely dried, the book launch took place just a few days ago, and already one of the copies – which is in demand not only amongst geology enthusiasts – is in the district’s possession. Almost exactly one year after the publication of the first volume in the book series on the GrenzWelten National Geopark, District Administrator Jürgen van der Horst has now also been presented with the second volume. Geopark Director Dr Georg Bresser was keen, as he was last year, to personally ensure that volume 49 of ‘Wanderungen in die Erdgeschichte’ arrived at the district offices.

“The geological aspects are, of course, the most important and extremely interesting, but the book also provides excellent suggestions for exciting walks in the Geopark area,” said the District Administrator, recounting his experiences whilst reading the first volume. Although he knows his local area really well, the walking tips actually pointed out one or two spots that he hadn’t known about before.

Following on from the eastern part of the Geopark in Part 1 of the ‘GrenzWelten’ book series, the latest publication now focuses on the western part. The author is once again Thomas Pawellek, a recognised expert on the region’s geology. As in the first publication, Pawellek emphasises above all how closely natural history and the present-day landscape are intertwined in the GrenzWelten. The Geopark boasts a fascinating geological past, traces of which are still visible in the landscape today – whether in the Bruchhauser Steine, on the Marsberg Geotrail or in the coral reefs around Brilon. ‘Wanderungen in die Erdgeschichte 49 – Der Geopark GrenzWelten, Westlicher Teil’ is available from bookshops for 35 euros. A third volume is planned for 2027, which will then complete the series by covering the southern part of the geopark.
