Protect animals from the sun and heat stress now

Due to the continuing hot weather, the Waldeck-Frankenberg district authority would like to remind everyone once again that it is essential to ensure that animals grazing in pastures have access to sufficient shade and plenty of drinking water.

Animals need special protection
As temperatures rise and sunlight intensifies, farm animals and pets need special protection. Sufficient fresh water and shaded places to retreat to are essential for their well-being and health. Unlike humans, animals have limited ability to regulate their body temperature. In the height of summer, an inadequate supply of water can quickly lead to health problems or even life-threatening situations. The Specialist Service for Food Safety, Animal Welfare and Veterinary Affairs therefore draws attention to the special requirements for animal husbandry during the summer months.

Water, shade, protection from insects
“An adequate supply of drinking water and sufficient shaded areas are vital for survival at this time of year,” emphasises official veterinary officer Catherina Hoes. “Ideally, the shaded areas should be located under large groups of trees. Shelters or sun awnings can also provide effective protection from direct sunlight.” When it is hot, animals try to regulate their body temperature by drinking more, sweating, increasing their breathing rate or moistening their skin. Shaded areas not only help them cool down, but also offer protection from flies, horseflies and mosquitoes.

: Increased inspections this summerIt is important that shaded and resting areas are large enough to allow all animals to find shelter at the same time. “Herd animals such as sheep, cattle, goats, pigs, horses and poultry often rest and feed at the same time. Therefore, there must be sufficient sheltered areas for the entire herd,” explains Hoes. To protect the animals, the specialist service will carry out more frequent inspections of the housing conditions for farm and domestic animals during the summer months. Staff from the district’s Food Safety, Animal Welfare and Veterinary Services department are available to answer any questions.
