Online lecture: Antifeminism and right-wing extremist discourses in the Tradwife trend

The so-called "tradwife" phenomenon is a digital lifestyle trend that is spreading on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. It is predominantly young women who present themselves as 'tradwives', propagating an idealised image of traditional gender roles: The man as provider, the woman as housewife, mother and emotional support. Gainful employment, gender equality policies and feminist achievements are often portrayed as an expression of an overtaxing modernity from which they consciously distance themselves.

In the Democracy Talk North Hesse on 7 May 2026 from 6 to 7:30 pm, Sophia Fechter will use a typology of central tradwife archetypes (including rural-nostalgic, luxurious, spiritual or openly anti-feminist) to show how these productions are marketed aesthetically, emotionally and economically. The lecture will also look at the political connectivity of the Tradwife trend for right-wing extremist ideologies. It will show that many tradwife influencers work with coded language and implicit interpretations that also occur in right-wing extremist discourses. Sophia Fechter is a research assistant at the Democracy Centre at the Philipps University of Marburg. She studied political science and history and has a master's degree in peace and conflict research.
