    The minimum age for obtaining a driving licence for classes A2, B, BE, C1 and C1E is generally 18 years. The driving licence for categories A1, AM, L and T can already be obtained at the age of 16.

    Detailed information on the relevant minimum age for the driving licence classes is provided by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure on its website.

    The granting of a driving licence before reaching the respective minimum age can only be considered if there are exceptional circumstances in your person that differ significantly from the situation of peers and waiting until you reach the minimum age would mean an unreasonable hardship for you.

    In Hesse, for example, the AM driving licence can currently be obtained at the age of 15.

  • Process flow

    If a driving licence class is to be issued before the minimum age is reached, you must submit an application for approval of an exception. The driving licence authority may order the submission of a medical-psychological report to clarify the suitability in order to prepare its decision.
