Extension of a driving licence by a further driving licence category

    Do you already hold a driving licence and would like to add another licence (category)?

    In principle, the provisions of the initial licence apply to the extension of a driving licence

    Exceptions exist for:

    • the extension of category A1 to category A2 and the extension of category A2 to category A:
      If you have previously held category A1 or category A2 for two years, you only have to take one practical test each time (promotion).
    • the extension of category B to category BE, of category C1 to category C1E, of category D to category DE and of category D1 to category D1E:
      Only one practical test must be taken in each case.

  • Process flow

    You submit the respective application for the extension of your driving licence to the driving licence authority responsible for you.

  • Which documents are required?

    • Identity card or passport, registration certificate if applicable
    • previous driving licence
    • current biometric photo according to PassV (size 45x35mm, portrait format, frontal photo)
    • Proof of participation in a first aid training course
    • Proof of eyesight
