Applying for a new driving licence

  • Performance specification

    If your driving licence has been revoked, you can reapply for it after the expiry of any period of suspension. In the application process, you must prove that your ability and suitability to drive a motor vehicle have been restored.

    The driving licence is issued for an unlimited period.

    Driving licences for categories C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE and D1E are issued for a limited period.

  • Which documents are required?

    • Application form
    • Identity card/passport, if necessary with certificate of registration
    • a recent biometric photo (size 45x35mm, portrait format, frontal shot); information and examples can be found in the photo sample board.
    • Proof of training in first aid

    For the application for driving licence classes AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, L or T additionally:

    • an eye test certificate or a certificate or expert opinion from an ophthalmologist

    For the application for driving licence classes C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE or D1E additionally:

    • Ophthalmological certificate or certificate according to Annex 6 of the Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV)
    • Medical certificate according to Annex 5 of the FeV

    For the application for driving licence classes D, D1, DE, D1E additionally:

    • Certificate of good conduct for submission to an authority

    After receipt of the application, further explanations/documents may be requested. Likewise, further measures still to be carried out, in particular an assessment or a possible examination, will be notified.

  • What are the fees?

    The administrative fee is charged in accordance with the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt).
    The amount of the fee depends on numerous different factors.
    Information in individual cases is provided by the locally competent authority.

  • What deadlines do I have to observe?

    You can apply for a new driving licence at the earliest 6 months before the end of the suspension period.

  • Legal basis

  • What else should I know?

    • Only the driving licence categories specified in the Driving Licence Ordinance can be reissued; if necessary, the categories of the withdrawn driving licence will be converted.
    • The new licence can only be issued to the extent of the authorisation you had before it was withdrawn.
    • In individual cases, it may be necessary for you to take the driving licence test again.
