Vehicle registration: Minors as vehicle owners
Performance specification
A minor may apply for the registration of a vehicle if his or her legal representatives consent (§§ 106, 107 German Civil Code -BGB-). For this purpose, written consent must be given to the vehicle registration authority.
Legal representatives of the minor are usually the parents (§ 1626 BGB), if necessary one parent or a guardian (§ 1793 BGB).
In addition to the above-mentioned declaration of consent, the vehicle registration authority requires a declaration from the legal representative(s) stating that they accept personal liability for any consequences arising from the registration of the vehicle.
A vehicle may only be registered to minors without a disability if the minor holds an appropriate driving licence for this vehicle.
Which documents are required?
When registering the vehicle, documents must be submitted in addition to those otherwise required for vehicle registration (see also Vehicle Registration New Vehicles):
- Declaration of consent of the parents/ minor (the ADAC offers a sample for such a declaration of consent on its website).
- Original identity cards of parent/guardian and of the minor
- For underage driving licence holders: Driving licence or test certificate "Accompanied driving from 17" and power of attorney in case of non-personal appearance.
- For severely disabled minors: severely disabled person's identity card
- For single custodians: proof of custody
Who do I need to contact?
Contact the registration office of your district or independent city. The responsibility depends on the place of residence of the vehicle owner (main residence according to the identity card).
