Motor vehicle: Apply for a towing permit

  • Performance specification

    Towing vehicles is regulated in § 33 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). Towing is the towing of an operable or inoperable motor vehicle (motor vehicle), unless the requirements for towing are met (see "Remarks"). The motor vehicle is operated as a trailer.

    In individual cases, an exceptional permit, the so-called towing permit, can be granted for this.

    • Application for an exemption to tow vehicles
    • Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document) of the towing vehicle
    • For towing vehicles with underride lift and/or lifting goggles, the load table
  • What are the fees?

    The fee is based on the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt). It amounts to a minimum of 10.20 euros and a maximum of 511.00 euros.

    No deadlines need to be observed.

  • What else should I know?

    The exemption may only be used if it is ensured that inoperable vehicles cannot be restored to an operable condition by simple repair work.

    The local scope of the exemption is limited to the state of Hesse and the towing distance to a maximum of 250 km.

    When towing, the following applies, among other things:

    • Only one vehicle may be towed at a time.
    • Vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 4 t may only be towed with the aid of a tow bar.
    • The lighting equipment prescribed or declared permissible for use as a motor vehicle may be fitted to the towed vehicle. If they are not prescribed for trailers, they do not have to be operational.
    • When towing, no cargo may be carried on the towed vehicle.

    Towing involves the concept of a stopgap measure. This means that the motor vehicle has become unpredictably inoperable and must be taken to the nearest suitable workshop or to another suitable destination as close as possible.
