    Anyone can be in need due to an accident, illness, death of a partner, unemployment, lack of income or insufficient income. Then they can receive social assistance under certain conditions. Social assistance is a legally guaranteed right. However, this only applies if the person concerned cannot help himself and no one else can help him. It does not matter how he or she got into hardship.

    Social assistance comes in different forms:

    • in the form of money, both as an ongoing monthly payment and as a one-off benefit
    • as payment in kind
    • as personal assistance, for example in obtaining a flat or a place in a home
    • through counselling and support for those seeking help

    Social assistance is provided by the local provider (Landkreis) and the local provider (Landeswohlfahrtsverband Hessen) of social assistance.
