New GeoStation at the ‘Christborn Spring’ Geotop of the Year

Following the detailed presentation of the first ‘Geotope of the Year’ – the Neanderthal site in Edertal-Buhlen – on ‘Geotope Day’, we now turn to the Christborn Spring in the Burgwald to present the second Geotope of the Year for 2026. This marks the first time a spring has been awarded this distinction. A new GeoStation will in future provide those interested with fascinating information on the geology, the habitat and the historical use of this historically significant site. The National Geopark GrenzWelten and the municipality of Burgwald cordially invite you to the official opening of the new GeoStation on Sunday, 4 October 2026. The event is free of charge; no registration is required.
: a geological curiosity and historical lifeline The Christborn spring is not only a fascinating geological phenomenon, but also a place that has shaped the settlement and use of the Burgwald over the centuries. The water from this extremely abundant and constant spring served as a source of livelihood for the local people and powered the mills. Thanks to its direct connection to the aquifers, the Christborn is a prime example of the springs and moors of the Burgwald and symbolises the importance of the subsoil for the region.
Programme for the event day: walking, learning and enjoying
The event on 4 October begins at 10.00 am at the Burgwald village hall with a guided walk past the ‘Heiligenborn’ spring to the Christborn spring. The route, which is approximately 6 km long and largely accessible, takes around 75 minutes to complete. At around 11.15–11.30 am, the official opening of the new geo-station will take place, led by Geopark Director Dr Georg Bresser and Mayor Lothar Koch. A Geopark information stand will offer further insights, and non-alcoholic cold drinks will be available. The Burgwald municipal bus will be on hand to provide convenient transport back from Christborn to the car park.
