The ‘Schreibersches Haus’ museum provides information on the origins and development of the residence of the Princes of Waldeck. Paintings and prints from the Kaulbach Collection showcase the work of the prominent 19th-century painting dynasty centred on Wilhelm von Kaulbach. The bel étage, furnished in the early Classicist style, is also used for small-scale exhibitions. The Schreibersches Haus is also one of the three oldest residential buildings on Schloßstraße. It was built in 1717 by the master builder Julius Ludwig Rothweil as a model for a large civil servant’s house. From 1751 to 1760, the Italian wine merchants Brentano, Spozetti and Andree were the owners of the house. Privy Councillor Hermann von Sonnenberg purchased the property from the latter and lived there for 25 years. The next owner was Prince Friedrich, who remodelled the house between 1785 and 1795 and added two side wings. This created a club and social venue in the early Classical style. The exquisite interior décor is the work of the court sculptor Friedrich Valentin (1752–1819). In 1869, Finance Councillor Schreiber acquired the property, which remained in the family for 110 years. The town of Bad Arolsen purchased the National Monument from the descendants in 1979 and carried out an extensive restoration. Since 2013, the building has been owned by the Hannelore and Heinz-Jürgen Schäfer Foundation, which, together with the town of Bad Arolsen and the museum association, maintains it and makes it available for cultural purposes.
