The Wolfgang Bonhage MUSEUM KORBACH, winner of the Museum Prize awarded by the Sparkassen Cultural Foundation of Hesse-Thuringia, is situated in the heart of Korbach’s old town, right next to the Gothic St Kilian’s Church and the old market square of the former Hanseatic town. Housed in an award-winning complex combining historic buildings with modern architecture, the museum is particularly impressive for its modern, educational and visitor-friendly design. Highlights include the 250-million-year-old fossils from the Korbach Fissure, artefacts from the town’s historic gold mining heritage, and the Baroque paintings of St Joseph from the ‘Alte Waage’. Reopened in 1997, the museum offers a tour through the history of the town and the region across approximately 1,700 m² of exhibition space. Among other things, Sub-Curator Carl Curtze explains what life was like in Korbach in 1840. The exhibition also focuses on the sections dedicated to gold, iron and copper mining. The Korbach Museum is particularly child-friendly. In each section – always marked in yellow – there is a theme or an exhibit aimed specifically at children. The museum is named after the former mayor of Korbach, Wolfgang F. Bonhage.
