Women's shelters provide unbureaucratic, rapid help to women who are affected or threatened by domestic violence. Children who are also affected are also cared for. Women's shelters offer protection in the form of refuge, counselling, accompaniment and support, e.g. they assist in having the physical consequences of abuse medically certified in a court of law. They provide information on the various forms of assistance, whether from public offices, courts, the police or other specialised counselling centres. The counselling services are also aimed at relatives, caregivers and professional helpers of the victims.
As a rule, women's shelters are run by associations. They are financially supported by public grants from the state of Hesse and the municipalities.
