The GrenzWelten National Geopark and the Adorf Miners’ Association are unveiling a new GeoStation. It is situated right at the entrance to the ‘Grube Christiane’ visitor mine. The information board, entitled ‘A Smoking Volcano in the Sea’, takes locals and visitors on a fascinating journey through time into the region’s geological past.

The new exhibition clearly explains how the local ore deposit was formed millions of years ago, when the region was still covered by the sea. At that time, undersea volcanoes and very hot rising water formed the valuable ore deposits that, much later, came to characterise mining in Adorf.

With easy-to-understand texts and graphics, the display vividly brings together geology and the region’s mining history. From now on, the GeoStation will serve as a permanent meeting point for the start of guided tours, as well as for anyone interested in visiting the mine near Adorf. The new GeoStation will be officially unveiled at the Miners’ Association’s summer festival on 30 August at 1 pm. All fans of GrenzWelten and the ‘Grube Christiane’, as well as anyone else interested in geology, are warmly invited to discover the former ‘smoking volcano in the sea’ during the summer festival.
