New GeoStation at the ‘Neanderthal site in Buhlen’, Geotop of the Year

As one of the two Geotopes of the Year for 2026, the Neanderthal site in Edertal-Buhlen has been given a new geostation. It will be unveiled on 20 September to mark ‘Geotope Day’.

Exploration of one of the two Geotopes of the Year 2026 – the Neanderthal site in Buhlen – is set to become even more vivid: On 20 September 2026 (Geotope Day), the completely refurbished and expanded information boards will be officially unveiled as a new GeoStation. From 11 am to 1 pm, the GrenzWelten National Geopark invites you to an introduction, a guided walk and an exclusive presentation of original artefacts. The event is free of charge; no registration is required.

The information provided about this historically significant archaeological site has been comprehensively updated. The information board at the Infopark car park and the identically worded information point on the cycle path above Buhlen have been completely replaced. In addition, visitors can now gain a deeper insight directly on site: A new, smaller information board has been erected right next to the archaeological site, approximately 200 metres north of Buhlen on the B 485. The site itself is now also more easily accessible via a convenient footpath leading directly from the playground at the information car park.

To complement the official unveiling of the information boards by Mayor Frederik Westmeier of the municipality of Edertal and Geopark Director Dr Georg Bresser, a guided walk from the information car park to the actual site of the discovery will be organised on 20 September. There will also be a special highlight for those interested, particularly families with children: a journey back to the Neanderthal era in the form of an on-site presentation. With the support of the Kassel Natural History Museum and the WOLFGANG BONHAGE Museum in Korbach, visitors will be able to view some of the Ice Age finds up close. Entertainment and further information will be provided by the Geopark’s information stand, whilst the Buhlen Citizens’ Association will be serving drinks and bratwurst.
