In the super-election year 2021, the Waldeck-Frankenberg district was due to hold direct elections for a new district administrator in addition to the local elections and the federal elections. The direct elections did not take place on a uniform date in the state, but were often combined with a supra-regional election. The election day and the date of a possible run-off election are determined by the respective representative body.

The direct election for the office of District Administrator of the District of Waldeck-Frankenberg for the new term of office beginning on 1 January 2022 took place together with the Bundestag election in 2021. In its meetings on 2 November 2021 and 3 May 2021 respectively, the district council had designated Sunday, 26 September 2021 as the election day for the election of the district administrator pursuant to section 42 of the Local Government Elections Act (KWG) and Sunday, 10 October 2021 as the day for a possible run-off election.

The candidates for the election of the District Administrator of the Waldeck-Frankenberg District were:

  • Dr Reinhard Kubat
  • Jürgen van der Horst

Direct elections are essentially conducted according to the same regulations as general municipal elections. The legal bases are the KWG and the Kommunalwahlordnung (KWO). However, it is always a majority election in which each eligible voter has only one vote. The person who receives more than half of the valid votes is elected. A run-off election takes place between the second and fourth Sunday after the main election among the two most successful candidates if the required majority has not been reached.
