School transport

  • Performance specification

The bodies responsible for transporting pupils are the municipalities that are responsible for the schools, i.e. the independent cities and the rural districts. They are responsible for the pupils living in their area.

Pupils of the primary school and the intermediate school (secondary level I.) are entitled to reimbursement of travel costs; this usually also includes the first year of vocational school (basic level). Pupils of the upper secondary school (Sekundarstufe II.) are not entitled to school transport.

Reimbursement of the costs of school transport is only possible if the school route is at least 2 kilometres long for primary school pupils and at least 3 kilometres long for pupils in grade 5 and above. Only if the way to school is particularly dangerous or the pupil is handicapped, the costs for a shorter way can be reimbursed.

As a rule, the school authority has to provide school transport via local public transport (ÖPNV).

The costs for the journey from the home to the relevant school are reimbursed. For pupils attending secondary schools, the costs of the journey to the nearest school at which the desired qualification can be obtained at the end of secondary school are reimbursed. If the parents decide to attend a school other than the competent school or the nearest school, the maximum reimbursement will be the costs that would have been incurred if they had attended the competent school or the nearest school.
