Neighbour complaints

A peaceful relationship between neighbours is a valuable asset that must be cultivated and preserved. In everyday life, however, neighbours may be annoyed and affected by noise or odour immissions.

If you have a complaint, first talk to the persons causing the immissions. If talks do not lead to a solution and you continue to feel unacceptably harassed, you can contact the responsible monitoring authorities.

The Agricultural Service can provide assistance on disturbances relevant to agriculture (e.g. nuisance caused by agricultural odours, etc.) or on questions of neighbouring rights in connection with agricultural land that lead to neighbourhood complaints.

  • Process flow

In case of complaints, contact your city or municipal administration, in acute cases the competent police authority. If necessary, the authorities will check on site whether noise, air pollution or odours are causing a considerable nuisance to the neighbourhood and arrange for the necessary measures to be taken (e.g. switching off a music system). Unnecessary and unreasonable nuisances can be punished as an administrative offence with a fine.

In residential areas, you may mow the lawn, scarify, drill holes or operate a motorised chain saw on working days between 7:00 - 20:00. A midday rest period is only to be observed if a relevant municipal bylaw so provides. This applies to pure, general or special residential areas as well as in recreational, spa and hospital areas. In mixed, commercial or industrial areas there are no time restrictions during the day.

There are different regulations for brush cutters, grass trimmers or grass edge trimmers, leaf blowers or leaf collectors. These may only be operated in residential and spa/clinic areas on working days from 9:00 - 13:00 and from 15:00 - 17:00. Further regulations on Sunday and public holiday rest remain unaffected, i.e. the devices may not be used on these days.
