Driving licence renewal: licences issued between 2002 and 2004 are due for renewal
The statutory process of exchanging old driving licences is moving into its next phase. The district of Waldeck-Frankenberg would like to point out that holders of card-style driving licences issued between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2004 are now required to exchange them. The deadline for this group is 19 January 2027. Driving licence holders born before 1953 do not need to exchange their licence until 19 January 2033, regardless of the year of issue.
Different ways to get a new driving licence
To make the process of exchanging licences as straightforward as possible for members of the public, there are several ways to submit an application:
The online application
The most convenient and quickest way is to apply online. You can complete the renewal process entirely from home via the district’s website at www.landkreis-waldeck-frankenberg.de/führerschein. To do this, you will need an identity card with online functionality enabled or a Bundes-ID account.
At the citizens’ service centres of towns and local authorities
As a convenient alternative, applications for the driving licence office can also be submitted directly to your own town or local authority. Many local authorities accept the documents and forward them to the relevant driving licence office for processing. This service does not apply to local authorities where a driving licence office is located on site. Residents are asked to check with their town or local authority in advance to find out whether a prior appointment is required.
At the driving licence offices
. Of course, you can also exchange your licence in person at the district’s driving licence offices in Korbach and Frankenberg. It is essential to book an appointment in advance. Appointments can be booked online via the district’s website or by telephone on the hotline 05631 954-1114.
Documents required
The following documents are required for the exchange:
- A valid identity document (identity card or passport with a certificate of residence)
- The current driving licence
- A recent biometric passport photograph
The applicable fees can be paid by EC card at the district’s driving licence offices.
The district administration asks all those affected to make use of the options listed and recommends submitting the application well in advance to avoid bottlenecks and long waiting times before the deadline of 19 January 2027. Further information, the online application form and much more can be found on the district’s website at www.landkreis-waldeck-frankenberg.de/führerschein.
